A little Southern Comfort for Monday, with Cletus

Somewhere along the line, though, I met a man from Laramie, Wyoming, a place where people actually wear cowboy boots and hats even when they’re wearing a suit. And their music? Country-western, of course.
Lord, how that once made me wince.
But true love and all that, blah blah. So I started listening to Lyle Lovett. Emmylou Harris. Mary Chapin Carpenter. It wasn’t so bad, really. Did you know Mark Knopfler sometimes sings country? Then I moved to Tennessee. Did you know Mark Knopfler sometimes sings country with Emmylou Harris?
Carrie Underwood is still a bit twee for me, however. But my daughter wanted to share one of her mucus music videos with me this evening — “Jesus take the wheel” — and since I’m currently trying to be a very attentive, caring parent (otherwise they leave the nest forever, you know) I sat down to watch it.
Okay, it’s really sort of sweet, isn’t it?
Well, turns out my sweet little daughter is almost as wicked as I am. She’d really only played the Carrie Underwood video for me so I’d be better able to appreciate the following, which (I must say) is TRULY a work of lyrical Southern genius.

Here’s the deal. I *love* Emmylou Harris. She’s my all time favorite, and I’m a bit verklempt that you would imply that it is a strange thing for Mark Knopfler would play with her (actually they did an album of duets a couple of years ago). Lyle Lovett. The best. Mary Chapin Carpenter isn’t really country (some would argue that Lyle isn’t either), but more Americana. And, yes, wonderful.
I’m at the cube farm and the video isn’t working. Will watch tonight.

“Mark Knopfler would” should be “Mark Knopfler to”
Sometimes editing is hard work.

Thank your daughter for laugh of the day. I had heard the “Jesus take the wheel” song, and found it a tad cloying. What a hoot to hear him call “Cletus take the reel!” I think your daughter is my kind of people.

Would that be “Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel” of “Simpsons” fame?

No, this is the “best friend Cletus who touchingly swings in slow-mo on tire swings.”

Ok, it is all fair to poke fun at that poor blonde, famous, toothy (I bet SHE flosses) singer. But in light of the former topics, maybe she has a point.

Susannah: I agree, on both points. For what it’s worth, he’s actually more overtly in that camp than she is…. check out some of his stand-up.
