Here’s a valuable story, brought to you in today’s CNN:
A photo of a breast-feeding Angelina Jolie will be featured on the November cover of W Magazine. In the picture, an actual, partial view of her actual breast shows, along with a tiny baby’s hand, so you will even be able to tell what she’s doing (eww, eww, EWWW!) with that breast.
I didn’t even know Angelina Jolie had breasts!
She’s certainly never shown them in public before. I’m also shocked that any modern-day publisher would ever be so crass as to feature Angelina Jolie’s partially-exposed breasts in a magazine, much less on the magazine’s cover!
Nursing mothers and their appallingly inappropriate (not to mention just plain icky) breasts. What are we going to do about them, America? Will we allow this outrage to stand?

Wait … what now? Angelina Jolie has breasts? I hadn’t even noticed!

What an outrage! Next thing you know, they’ll cover a naked pregnant woman…

I’m so offended.

I hate this. They are putting Angelina breast feeding on the cover for the boob shots. It is not to promote breastfeeding or to make us think of breasts as food sources rather than objects of lust. No, it is to sexualize breastfeeding even more. Every time I hear some male say he is uncomfortable with a woman breastfeeding, I wish he hadn’t shared his issues with me so personally. Our society is too hung up on the Pamela Anderson, Playboy, pin-ups, etc… to ever get comfortable with breast feeding. I think Angelina is making it terribly worse (can I see Sarah Palin breastfeeding?- then we’d have some progress!!!) We can’t even handle calling it breast feeding – we have to call it “nursing” (which always confused me as I am an RN and nursing was my profession not feeding babies!!).

I think it is okay for nursing to be functional and sexy. (It is the nursing moms who nick-named their nursing blanket the “hooter hider!”) If some new moms see that Angelina is nursing, perhaps they will too! The percentage of nursing mothers is actually dropping- so I think it is great when high-profile moms talk about nursing. Heavens, Gwen Stephani talked about nursing her son well into his first year- maybe even past one- GASP! I think that is SEXY!

You can do that with breasts?

Hmm..
Would it help if we only allowed ugly women to breast feed in public, to spare the rest of us any unnecessary emotional conflict?

The wonderful thing about breasts is they’re so multifaceted.

When I’m sitting on the park bench breastfeeding my baby, I don’t want men leering at me. It should be the most normal thing in the world for us to see women doing. So why do Americans have such issues with it? We are prudes and perverts at the same time. I think we have made breasts into too big of a deal. I’m betting American women have the most implants per capita in the world. We are breast obsessed but don’t want to see them used the way babies need them to be used. I’m moving to an African village somewhere where I can just go topless and noone bats an eye. And Angelina should go to another village where she wont be noticed anymore either. But not my village.

I thought she only had lips.

Ooh…I can’t wait for this issue! Not because my dear, sweet Angelina is breast feeding, but because she is my hero. I have nothing important to say about this. Just needed to profess my love

Okay – maybe I am unaware that I am really an unattractive person and that NO ONE in the world cares about me, but here’s the thing….I nursed in public occasionally when the kidlets were younger – not obsessively, and not blatantly, just discreetly and out of necessity, and here’s the thing. No guy ever leered at me or othewise “sexualized” me for doing my maternal duty. So I kind of don’t buy it when all these women get all worked up about desperately needing to breastfeed in public and then being sooooo offended than men keep gawking. Where in the world do you live that this is happening? Cause it sure ain’t happening in Minnesota. To borrow a line from Almostgotit herself, “I’m just SAYING…”

I can guarantee, dear readers, that Career Encourager is *very* attractive.
I agree with Susannah that our culture has some very weird ideas about breasts, but I suspect that if more women refused to give in to the pressure to hide until their children were weaned, we’d all get over our weirdness a lot sooner.
I’m just SAYING…
