			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p align="left"><font size="2" face="Arial">Many thanks to ALL the folks who responded to my post yesterday!  I appreciated every comment you posted.  Additionally, Deb replied to me on her blog, <a href="http://debowen.typepad.com/8hours/2008/07/companies-need-to-be-fabulous-to-attract-good-talent.html?cid=121782484#comments">8 hours &amp; a lunch</a>, as did Ann over at <a href="http://compforce.typepad.com/compensation_force/2008/07/internet-pay-da.html?cid=121710668#comments">Compensation Force, </a>.  Ann made the good point that it&#8217;s a buyer&#8217;s market out there, so (of course) job seekers like me have to hustle. </font></p>
<p align="left"><font size="2" face="Arial">I agree: yes we do.  But.</font></p>
<p align="left"><font size="2" face="Arial">Recruiters may feel justified in abusing potential employees, given the current job market.  If they do, they are making a mistake, and their organizations will suffer for it as much as any individual employee ever will.   Which is my whole point.</font></p>
<p align="left"><font size="2" face="Arial">Also,  I am not making this up:  employers really are employing more <a href="http://www.almostgotit.com/2008/07/09/un-fabulous-employers-asking-for-too-much-upfront/">bad hiring tricks </a> than I&#8217;ve ever seen before.  At the very least, they give me pause, and in some cases have kept me from applying altogether.  Nor am I the only one.</font></p>
<p align="left"><font size="2" face="Arial">And who knows?  One of us might have been the player who turned <em>your</em> company into Microsoft. </font></p>
<p align="left"><font size="2" face="Arial"><strong>&#8220;Employee needed.  No Calls Please!  Send application to P.O. Box ###.&#8221;</strong></font></p>

<p align="left"><font size="2" face="Arial">One last gripe: blind box ads like these that proliferate in the paper.  No employer or company name is listed, no contact information (other than a post office box) is provided.  And I&#8217;m supposed to respond with full personal detail in return?  <em>No f-ing way.</em></font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Arial">Now I have to confess something.  I interviewed last week with an organization that had posted a blind box advertisement.  I&#8217;d seen the ad and had already ruled it out, when <a href="http://www.almostgotit.com/2007/04/26/we-are-always-networking/">a person in my network </a> called me about the same job.  I submitted my resume and got an interview, but it wasn&#8217;t a good fit, and I think both sides figured this out in short order.</font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Arial">But I still have no idea why this particular organization, looking for a PR person no less, was afraid to list its own name in public. Two <a href="http://www.lawcrossing.com/article/index.php?id=51">reasons employers may choose blind ads </a>are (a) to covertly oust a current employee or (b) to hide their hiring activities from competing employers.  Do you want to work for a company that may fire and hire this way?  Do you want to work for an organization that may be trying to underbid its competitor for your paycheck? The listed job may even be your own!</font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Arial">I still have no intention of responding blindly to blind box ads in future.  There remain some <a href="http://www.collegegrad.com/jobsearch/9-15.shtml">intriguing work-arounds</a>, however, which I may try next time a blind box ad catches my eye.  I do like learning how to play a player!  And i</font><font size="2" face="Arial">f this is a new game, I am going to have to learn how to play it, albeit on terms I can also live with.<font size="2" face="Arial"> </font></font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Arial">I&#8217;ll keep trying to be fabulous.</font><font size="2" face="Arial">  </font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Arial">It&#8217;s just that I haven&#8217;t seen a whole lot of “fabulous” coming from employers these days, a</font><font size="2" face="Arial">nd damitol, can&#8217;t it be someone else&#8217;s turn to be fabulous for a change?</font></p>

<p>I had a good lunch today with a bunch of martial arts and marketing people, with whom I have remarkably little in common.  Our state has just legalized a certain activity, and these people are poised to get in on the ground floor and make some money out of it.    I have no idea why they invited me along, except that I know a couple of them and we like each other.  Nor did I really have anything to contribute to the animated conversation, except to cheer them on.  </p>
<p>You know that comic, “Rose is Rose,” in which the mother, Rose, has a punked-out alter-ego named Vicki who wears a leather mini and rides a motorbike?  Who craves rattle-snake chili and sports a tattoo?</p>
<p>That was me today. Vicki the Biker Chick.</p>
<p>Karen over at Working Girl had another <a href="http://www.karenburnsworkinggirl.com/?p=367">good post about networking</a> this week, and gives some really good advice, including this:  anyone can network, anywhere.   She also makes the very good point that job-hunting should be fun.  Well, she actually makes that point in <a href="http://www.karenburnsworkinggirl.com/?p=368">today’s post</a>,  but it’s true.  Job searching is damn hard work, and it’s very easy to become bitter, grim, and warlike about it. </p>
<p>The problem is that most employers aren’t really looking for bitter, grim, and warlike people. </font><font size="2" face="Arial"> </font></p>
<p>Even more importantly, that isn&#8217;t any way to live, period.  After all, life is what happens when you&#8217;re waiting around for the next thing to happen.  Life is what happens while you&#8217;re still looking for a job.</font><font face="Arial"> </font></font></p>
<p>Get out there and network.  Not because it’s good for your job prospects (though it is) but because it’s good for <em>you</em>.  So put down those </font><a href="http://www.almostgotit.com/2008/06/21/why-cupcakes/"><font size="2" face="Arial">sad old cupcakes </font></a><font size="2" face="Arial">, gas up that Harley, and go out and get yourself some fun!</font></p>

<p>My mother-daughter book club has been trying to decide when we can meet this summer, and the email has been piling up:  there&#8217;s just way too many summer camps, graduations, and family trips to work around.   Consequently, I have just dusted off a snappy tool I once used to organize business meetings, and you should know about it, too. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.meetingwizard.com">MeetingWizard.Com</a> is a free, simple-to-use website that helps a group set up a gathering (of any kind!) in just a few easy steps:</p>
<p>1) The organizer fills in a simple online form (adding email addresses, an event description, and all possible meeting times), and MeetingWizard sends out an email linking everyone to a page containing the response form.  Note: once you&#8217;ve added email addresses to MeetingWizard, you can re-use them forever.</p>
<p>2) All recipients of the email respond by selecting ALL possible dates (note: not just the still-open dates they prefer &#8211; nor will MeetingWizard allow them to do that, clever Wiz that it is!)</p>
<p>3) MeetingWizard collates all responses in one place so it&#8217;s very easy to see which date or dates work best for everyone.</p>
<p>4) The Wiz can automatically choose the first date without conflicts, or you can choose one yourself.  MeetingWizard then sends everyone an email announcement of chosen date.</p>
<p>5) MeetingWizard can also be set to automatically send out a reminder a day or so before the actual event.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I received an email today from an AmeriCorps VISTA leader in Oregon, asking if I was available to work in Portland&#8217;s <a href="http://www.nayapdx.org/about/jobs/americorpsvista-positions.php">Native American Youth and Family Center</a>. Unfortunately, that&#8217;s several thousand miles away! </p>
<p><a href="http://www.americorps.org/Default.asp">AmeriCorps</a>  is not just for 17-24 year olds. Members of <a href="http://www.americorps.org/about/programs/vista.asp">AmeriCorps VISTA program </a>are expected to have a college degree or some working experience, and commit to serving full-time for a year. In exchange, VISTA workers receive training, moving assistance, health care, and a $4725 education award. Members also receive a modest living allowance.</p>
<p>VISTA members commit to a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more.   Just think:  You could <a href="http://www.nayapdx.org/about/jobs/americorpsvista-positions.php">work in Portland</a>, too.</p>

<p>A terrific book inspired it all.  <a href="http://www.smithmag.net/sixwords/">Not Quite What I Was Planning&#8230;</a> Compilation from submissions to a contest.  My dad sent me a copy.  I have not thanked him yet.  You can <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Not-Quite-What-Was-Planning/dp/0061374059">buy one from here.</a>   Good <a target="_blank" href="http://www.newyorker.com/talk/2008/02/25/080225ta_talk_widdicombe">review in the New Yorker</a>.   Entirely written in six word sentences.  Cleverly, they didn&#8217;t point this out. I&#8217;m not so clever, just slow.  </p>
<p>I liked their idea, so borrowed. </p>
<p>The book is clever, funny, poignant.   Here&#8217;s a few of my favorites:</p>

<p>My, this is a daunting task. Tried to sum things up: failed.  Advisors say don&#8217;t think too much.  I wrote a few, can&#8217;t choose.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Blogging may have to take a back seat again this week.</p>
<p>A friend of ours (I’ll call her “Joy”) died very suddenly yesterday morning. The married mother of 9-year-old “Phillip,” she was the parent with the steady income and the health insurance plan.</p>
<p>The family had many plans for the future, but this scenario wasn’t one of them. There was no will, few financial reserves, and though Joy’s husband “Andy” is a shrewd businessman in his own right, this hit him as an absolute broadside.</p>
<p>All he can do right now is weep or look stunned. And whatever he has left, his son needs it all.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the rest of us are stunned too, and trying to put together the beginnings of what to do next for <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,71621,00.html">someone whose spouse suddenly dies</a>.</p>
<p>Yesterday, amidst the busiest weekend of the church year, finding an available priest for the family was my first emergency. Today, between holiday celebrations, we&#8217;ve been arranging a funeral.</p>
<p>Everybody dies. And there are <a href="http://www.help4srs.org/publications/pdf/Death_Checklist.pdf">basic “death checklists” </a>that virtually everyone will deal with at some point, given our universal mortality.</p>
<p>Most of these checklists assume a person is older, however, and without quite so many entanglements.</p>
<p>Where are all the <em>other</em> answers? <em>(oh, help!)</em></p>
<p>And where&#8217;s the universal genius who&#8217;s supposed to be in charge of all of this, anyway?</p>
<p>Someone needs to reassure and manage Andy&#8217;s clients until he can do so again himself. Since Andy taught me much of what I know about webpage management, some of this may fall on me.</p>
<p>Andy and Phillip also need financial advice, legal advice, and health insurance. They need money and childcare and household management plans and community support. They need everything.</p>
<p>Nor are these homeless people, or hermits. They have friends, relatives and co-workers. They are “plugged in.” And we, the family&#8217;s network, are doing what we can.</p>
<p>What strikes me is how stupid, and helpless, we all still are.</p>
<p>Most of all, though, I vacillate between wanting to weep and wanting to yell, because God Damn it, Easter or no, this is <em>all wrong, </em>and <em>Phillip needs his mother! </em></p>
